J.37/ Sustainable Wellness Changes
As the new year rolls around it’s important to remember to make small adjustments to our health and wellbeing. Sometimes people get a little too excited and make too many changes they can’t keep up with and then this results in failure. The key is small and achievable goals, over time this will become apart of your lifestyle and not a huge change all at once.
I work a lot with my clients about goal setting, it allows both of us to know what we’ll be achieving and what we are working towards. Goals can be something short term or something long term, sometimes it’s great to have both! One of the important parts to setting goals is making them something you can achieve, it has to sit in a spot where it’s pushing you out of your comfort zone but also where you’re not setting yourself up for failure. I also like to educate clients on making sustainable changes, by this I mean small changes that you can keep up with and continue to make apart of your lifestyle, not something that is temporary. Goal setting is great all year round and doesn’t have to be specifically for the new year because you’ll find your goals will change and grow as you do.
Sustainable health changes can be applied to all aspects of your wellbeing, I like to apply a 80/20 rule. 80% of your time is aiming for good health and being conscious of food and exercise and then 20% of the time you can be more flexible with your choices, you can lash out more with food or reduce your movement if needed. This allows you to still have time and space for special treats and you’re not restricting yourself. This helps to make health and wellness more of a lifestyle change rather than just something short term. It means it’s okay to not be perfect all the time, it’s okay to skip a work out, it’s okay to enjoy take out or eat something you normally wouldn’t.
There are some basic guidelines for wellbeing I like to include for clients. This includes ensuring you’re staying hydrated with filtered water, getting outdoors into nature daily, including daily movement, practicing mindfulness and eating a well balanced clean diet. With food it’s great to aim for minimal processed food, no packet food (if possible), good quality protein, seasonal fruit and vegetables, a variety of complex carbohydrates and to include good fats. This all isn’t always possible but I’d suggest to try to stick to this as much as you can.
With all this at the forefront of your mind start your wellness journey now! Don’t wait for a specific date or the right timing, just start. Your health shouldn’t have to wait for it to be convenient for you. You can start putting into action short and long term goals, journal it all and write out a plan on how you’ll achieve it. Start living life by the 80/20 rule and eating a balanced clean diet, these are things you can start today.
